It's very unusual for hurricanes to hit the mountains of western North Carolina, so when Hurricane Helene hit this region in September 2024, no one was expecting the devastation that ensued and no one had hurricane insurance. Between 15 and 21 inches of rain fell within three days, causing flash flooding and landslides that claimed the lives of 107 people. With an estimated 78.7 billion dollars in damage, the recovery effort continues to this day. There are still people displaced or struggling to make home repairs.
